Foundation Continuum of Training

Why FCOT?

Foundation Surgery Affiliates initiated the development of FCOT (Foundation Continuum of Training) in the early spring of 2002. Initially, FCOT was conceived to satisfy the educational and training requirements of Foundation?s corporate/regional employees and the clinical and clerical employees of the various facilities Foundation manages. It quickly became apparent to us that there was no "in the box" program that would satisfy the diverse educational/training requirements we considered imperative to achieve our goal to truly be the "best of the best."

Countless hours have been spent in developing an understanding of:

  • different methods of "delivering" training, whether through the Internet, seminars, etc.
  • how to identify "mission critical" skills from other skill requirements
  • where to acquire "good content" and how to differentiate good content from not-so-good content
  • how to best monitor employee/student progress
  • ...and the list goes on.

During this effort, it also became apparent that we were not developing a tool that would simply provide incremental increases in productivity, motivation, awareness, etc; we were, in effect, developing a tool for SURVIVAL. Some studies indicate that 50% of the skills used by our employees in their everyday jobs will be totally obsolete in five years; continued use of these "obsolete" skills would significantly hamper our ability to compete in an already competitive business environment. Since we don"t know which 50% of the skills needed to run our businesses would become "obsolete," our only viable option is "continual training." Given the torrid pace that technology is changing the way all of us conduct our businesses, we have no choice. Education and training are of paramount importance to our success and our survival.

On a job-by-job, function-by-function basis, we have identified and prioritized skill requirements from "Mission Critical" to "have value." Our mandate is to train those enrolled in the FCOT program to the educational/training objects established in each student's (employee's) IDP (Individual Development Plan). As an example, for an employee involved in medical procedure coding, the emphasis will be on coding. Our directive is to train them to be the best coder possible and continually keep them at that level. Again, skills other than coding are involved to insure the development of a true "skill set," but the emphasis will be on coding. The same goes for billing, collections, scrub techs, nursing, etc.

Enrolling your employees in a continual educational/training program sends a message to each student that (a) their job is important and (b) they are important. You, as an employer, are making an investment in both their success, as well as the success of your organization.

We are obviously excited about the contributions FCOT will make to increases in productivity to all individuals and entities involved in the program. We also believe that this type of training is imperative to business survival; if you elect not to participate in FCOT, we strongly recommend you find another avenue for training your employees.
